Daddy’s Creek, Tennessee | Cumberland Plateau ~1.71’

Last week I spent some time on the Cumberland Plateau in Tennessee and got to check out some local gems. Daddy’s Creek flows through the Catoosa Wildlife Management area and has seasonal closures for various management reasons. We were fortunate to catch it on a day it was open, and also had some water. It’s easy to see why this beautiful 3/4 creek is so beloved. The water was clear, with tower...

Demolition has already begun on the largest dam removal project in history. By this time next year Klamath River in Oregon and California should be nearly free from the constraints of four large dams along its length. Last weekend the final guaranteed recreational releases from JC Boyle dam (one of the four slated for removal) were conducted, marking the end of guaranteed summer high flows on t...

For the first time in 69 years (at least as far as anyone can remember), the American Whitewater annual in-person board meeting was held in New England last weekend. Our staff and board gathered near the Deerfield to tend to the necessary business of the organization, concurrent with the annual Deerfield River Festival. I didn’t live in New England for very long, but that time there looms large...

Nice video, that packraft looked more like a hardshell creeker. What version of the Valkyrie is it? Have any issues with punctures or hull damage?
Can you tell me about your outboard situation? I have a Vic 18 and stock motor bracket with trolling motor. I would like to get an outboard for it, but my 15” 2.6 I don’t think will be long enough for it. Thanks
Thanks for posting! Does the rapid at 3:15 have a name?
thanks for the virtual trip....
What’s the level in this?
Not sure. Low-medium
How do these,18s do in the ocean? Can they hold an asymmetrical spinnaker?
Any luck in the ocean?
This run was "discovered" around 1978 and within a couple of years, it was a popular commercial raft run. I started running it as a commercial guide in '79 and, one time, brought along my C-1 for a first descent of Caldera.
Haha crazy I found this video! I was the guy at the end in the double duck!
Sad I missed you! I am a local Eugene boater and ran this in my Spud on Monday. Love your videos of local runs maybe I will see you out sometime!
The vic 18s are so elegant. Do folk ever add a boom vang?
They’re really cool boats! I’ve never felt the need to add a vang, but one could. I suppose one problem would be some geometry to either get a vang to affix to the mast at an angle sufficient to provide some benefit, or to put a chain plate somewhere in the cockpit but risk cluttering it and the companionway. For a max hull speed of about 5.7kts I’m not sure it’s worth the fuss.
I'm looking at buying one of these boats, if you have opinions I'd love to hear them, hoping to spend a summer cruising around the great lakes
I have no complaints! They're super fun, really stable, and can take the puffs in stride with all that lead in the keel. It's a real head turner. Not going to overnight comfortably, but it's an excellent day sailor, or spartan weekender if you're camping on shore.
I picked one up recently, can't wait to get it back to its glory
Okie Dokie!
Boater is ballz deep in paranoia. Enjoy the river bro!
Nice video shitty music
It's been 5 years. How's it held up?
Thanks for the footage!
haha beater
Went down this river once and saw 4 guys in 2 separate canoes heading towards some falls. They kept paddling and at least one of them fell out while the others got catapulted into the gorge they didn't know they were about to go over. Still don't know if they got out lol.
Sweet, I gota get over there. thanks for the share. peace.
So good!
@@clintonbegley groovy. have you been on lake creek? I went out the other day. ruclips.net/video/Zy3BGf2JsEI/видео.html&ab_channel=SplitNutRanch
Great video keep it up 👍
Killer Ride!
What I’d give for one more opal gorge lap at this flow 😔
How's the face after that?
Wow! that looked awesome on the big tv, awesome footage👍
Awesome level
is one guy in a dry suit and the other nothing?
The navigability of these particular rapids by jet boat is deboatable
What are the strainer hazards Like? Still tunable right now?
👍👍👍
Awesome, looked like a fun time out there!
Thanks for sharing. I also sailed for a week (ASA) on Kipper Kite some 10+ years ago in the San Juans. Great and safe boat and total fun. (In fact, I am driving the spinnaker Kipper in the SJS brochure photo, up in Desolation Sound)
What gauge?
It's on AW
@@clintonbegley thx. I was curious if you were giving the Siuslaw near Mapleton (USGS) gauge reading, same as for the play run, or the actual gauge on the bridge I’ve heard about. Looks like AW lists the USGS, and I saw you mentioned the gauge being well downstream, so I figured that may be what you were using. AW does mention both. Here is their text for reference, in case others are curious. FLOWS: The online gauge is far downstream, thus is only used as a ballpark estimate. On that gauge 6' usually equates to a class IV flow, and 9' a class V flow. 7.5 is IV+. This section also appeared runnable at 18' on the online gauge, but serious class V. It is not known whether it has ever been run that high. Because that gauge is so far downstream, the more relevant gauge is a visual gauge located on the put in bridge. On this gauge 7' is class IV, and 8.5' is class V. 7.5' is IV+.
@@kevinhill.8 gotcha! Wasn’t trying to be short or flip, I didn’t remember so much discussion about the gauges on the AW page. Locals all use the same siuslaw gauge that is also for the play run. Predictions about the creek run, play run, and sweet creek all use the same reference gauge of the siuslaw at mapleton. And, it’s the one I used for the figure in the title. I hope that helps!
@@clintonbegley no worries. Thx for the info. Much appreciated.
wheres the starting point for that? can you drive to it? those are 2 different rivers/creeks??
Would love to learn were should I start been kayak lakes and slow moving rivers I’m getting older so it’s time to stop dreaming of doing and start doing but we’re do I start

Hello! I have the same boat 😃 thanks for sharing the video. Question fo you. Do you get a lot of water in the hull while sailing? When I put mine back on trailer there is a ton of water that comes out the rear drain. I figure it comes in through the swing keel opening in the hull. I really need to fix the issue. Seriously, I will pull to the side of the launch ramp and it will pour out for 10 minutes. Thanks!
im very late to this but no that is a problem. i have the same boat and dont get any water in when sailing
It’s great to see boaters playing on the river. Thanks for the ride.
Thanks! It’s a real gift in the otherwise dry summer!
Yewwwww! lol Despite little beta your wall of vodoo line was clean.
Just bought a bay liner us yachts 18 and don’t know anything about sailing. May I contact you? I have questions about parts and pieces of the boat. My email is tjkimble@yahoo.com. Many thanks!
Sure! I'll email you.
I'm new to ww kayaking but not to ww. I used to be a raft guide in CA but live in MN now where there are good ww kayak rivers but nothing with enough volume to raft. I'm 6"4 and 250lbs and I got a dagger rewind Large. I cannot find stability in this kayak, I have only paddled IKs in the past and this is a very different feel. I can't move my seat forward cause I'm too tall. Does anyone have any other tips to help with stability? So far I can't even keep stable on a choppy lake, much less a river haha. Thanks to anyone for comments
Hi Adrian, thanks for the question. If this is your first time in a hard shell kayak you’re likely to feel the instability no matter what boat you paddle. With practice you should feel more stable. Also, paddling flat water isn’t what these boats are designed for - just keeping them going straight in flat water can be a workout. Additionally, the seat adjustment is NOT for fit. Moving the bulkhead abs seat and thigh bolsters are your fit adjustments - as you’ve likely indicated, moving the seat is for performance and if you cant make performance adjustments because the fit of the boat is too small, then it’s the wrong boat for you. Lastly, I’d recommend a whitewater kayaking course. They’ll outfit you in a boat for your size and teach you the basics and help troubleshoot what you might be experiencing. It sounds to me like you need a larger boat that you can adjust the trim on, and some intro instruction or at least someone at the pro-shop or a local kayak club to help you troubleshoot. Best of luck!
Is that you playing the hang drum too?!? Lolz, looks fun!
lol, thanks buddy. I keep off the skinz these days - hurts too many eardrums. ;)
Looks like fun!
We had a blast!
Thanks for posting. The Tiger Creek Dam run is part of the Caliornia Wild and Scenic River section of the N. Fork Mokelumne. This elevation was home to the Plains Miwok and in summer, a little farther east, the Washoe people. I've never seen Mokelumne translated as "Condor River" and I've worked on Mokelumne issues for nearly 32 years. Most people say it translates from Miwok as "people of the fishnets," "-umne" being a suffix meaning "people of." But I should check that with local Miwok speakers.
Five falls were ahead, but we were only to hit three, they put another guide in our boat to insure our safety...they put the lead guide in our boat..he was a rafting God. I had much confidence in him..he too was named Todd..but after one bump, he was swallowed by a wave..he didn't go alone...once again we lost Dave...then Brandon gone thrown, I figured we surely was done..for once we had 2 guides...now we had none..all five falls we hit...they all being scarey...I'm not a catholic man....but I did two our fathers and one hail mary
Is this the section below Lake Berryessa?
It is!
Thanks for the great write-up. Def going to refer to this section as Reality Falls from now on.
I love it! Water is cold!
Great run. I had no idea that Little White Salmon was so fun at that level. Do you know how deep Spirit falls landing pool is Clinton? I'm thinking of dropping it on a river board.
Hi Owen, yeah it's actually a pretty accessible and fun way to experience a classic... with an asterisk. ;) I don't know how deep the pool is, but I know folks have riverboarded off it at higher flows. I wouldn't want to give you inaccurate information about this flow range. That said, we did have two people do "throw and go" off the top with some pretty impressive pencil dives into the pool at this flow and no one broke their ankles!
Thanks for sharing your video love the way you share the information
